Current Projects and Operations
Snow Removal – Involves the removal of snow from the City’s streets and alleys. Please see the City’s Snow Removal Policy for details on the City’s snow removal operations.
Street Maintenance – Street replacement is done by both City crews and contract labor. Maintenance includes replacement of concrete and pothole patching.
Sidewalk Replacement – The City utilizes a portion of local option sales tax to replace damaged or hazardous sidewalks throughout the city. Individual homeowner participation and partial reimbursement for sidewalk replacement is possible. Please see the City's
Sidewalk Rehab Policy(28kb Word Document)
> for details on sidewalk replacement.
Tree Trimming – The City trims trees within the City’s right-of-way to prevent damage to snow removal equipment and to prevent obstructed views of traffic control devices.
Storm Sewer Maintenance – The street shop maintains the City’s storm sewer system. This maintenance includes repair of storm sewer mains, manholes and intakes.
Street Sweeping – The street shop runs the street sweeper five-(5) days a week as the weather permits. This operation not only removes dirt and debris from the streets, but also reduces the amount of pollution in the storm water runoff.
Crack Sealing – This operation is necessary to minimize the amount of water getting under the pavement. When water infiltrates the pavement surface the sub grade beneath the pavement becomes soft causing damage to the pavement.
Traffic Sign Maintenance - The street shop maintains all of the traffic control signs in Knoxville, with the exception of those located along Highway 14. Residents are encouraged to report damaged signs or signs that are difficult to read at night.
Traffic Signal Maintenance – The street shop replaces the bulbs in the traffic signals. The City uses a private contractor for all other necessary repair and maintenance.
Alley Maintenance – The City maintains the public alleys in the City. Alley maintenance is considered low priority and surfaces are maintained only when necessary. The City uses a v-pick on the front of the maintainer to stir up the existing rock in an alley surface and then grades the loose gravel. Gravel is only when necessary.
